Nomad is proud to always help others where we can. We’ve supported the below charities and many other causes over the years, and will continue to always help good causes both in the UK and in Greece (within the limits of what a small company can do).
Saras Hope Foundation
http://www.sarashopefoundation.co.uk/
Saras Hope Foundation is a wonderful charity which runs a holiday retreat in Crete, Greece offering respite for children and young people with cancer and their families. The charity is run by Ged and Julie Hoburn and named in honour of their daughter Sara, who tragically lost a two year battle with a rare form of colon cancer at the age of sixteen in 2001. The community in western Crete are very supportive of Saras Hope too, and Nomad is proud to be able to help them occasionally with transport services.
The Sagapame Gavalochori Festival
A wonderful festival organised each September in the Apokoronas area of Crete, Sagapame raises money for local charities including the Vamos Health Centre and the local Red Cross. In 2018 more than EUR2,000 was raised for these important causes.
The GAIA Network in the Mani, Peloponnese
The GAIA network is a fantastic organisation working in the west Mani, supporting organisations from the fire service to an addiction clinic. Nomad has supported many of GAIA’s fundraising efforts since we first heard about them a few years ago.
FLIK – Friends Living In Kefalonia
https://www.facebook.com/kef.flik/
Nomad is often asked to transport things for charities, and while we can’t always help, we do our best to help when we can. FLIK contacted us with a request to transport a range of medical devices and pieces of equipment that had been donated by Lyon Hospital to Argostoli Hospital in Kefalonia. We were happy to be able to help. We were surprised to find all of the items shrink-wrapped and on trolleys (photos above!) – the well meaning people in Lyon were obviously not expert packers. But our guys made room for them and successfully transported everything down to Argostoli hospital.
Almyrida Annual Christmas Party / Winter Fayre
The Almyrida Winter Fayre was a tradition in Crete, going from strength to strength and raising more than 6,000 for local charities in its last year. The local charities benefiting from this amazing event include the Red Cross, the Samaritans, Helping Hands, Vamos & Armeni Health Centres, local schools, KIFAAMEA, ELEPAP and the Alzheimers Centre. Nomad provides free transport for some of the supplies needed for the event (which come from the UK), as well as donating prizes for the auction.
Refugee Charities in Greece
There is a lot of support in the UK for the plight of refugees arriving in Greece, particularly on Lesvos. When we are able to we transport donated goods from the UK to support groups and NGOs operating in Rhodes and Lesvos (and on one occasion even to Calais).
Smartworks
https://www.smartworks.org.uk/
Formerly known as Dress for Success, Smartworks provides high quality interview clothes, styling advice and interview training to out-of-work women on low incomes. They do a fantastic job of instilling women with the confidence they need to interview well and get great jobs.
Nomad has been helping Smartworks since 2011, mainly by providing free storage, as well as some transport services. This helps the dedicated team at Smartworks to manage with limited space in their London offices, and gives them the breathing space they need to sort through their donated clothing consignments and prepare them for use by their clients.
