I sold my house in June and they collected everything making a detailed inventory before taking it into their storage. We were very happy with this decision, as Takis was a great help in preparing the arrival of the Container, dealing with the local Authorities and then transferring all items from Piraeus to Paros Island. Our home in Kostos is located within the alleyways of the traditional Village with no direct road access. Nomad arranged locally for a small Piaggio Transporter, which greatly helped moving items closer to our home. Moving ………It is a stressful thing moving from the UK to Greece, and we are so glad we found Nomad to help us.  Nomad took all the stress away.

After a telephone call and then email detailing the size of our move, Nomad provided us the most competitive quote of all in a very timely manner.

We packed most of the items ourselves but Nomad’s UK team provided us with assistance expertly packing the more tricky and fragile items, such as paintings and mirrors that required expertise and materials that we did not posses to ensure a safe transit. Just wanted to say thanks to you and your team for the delivery to Kefalonia and everything turned up safe and sound.

You may remember that we started packing many months before the actual collection day and felt that all the items were well packed. We received a call early on the morning of the collection, in the UK, from your guys, just before they left your depot asking what kind of items were being shipped, so they could bring any necessary extra packaging.

On their arrival they very diplomatically suggested that some of the items did not have sufficient packing and if we didn’t mind, they would repack about 10%. As they had the expertise, we happily followed their advice. All the packages were listed / numbered and we were quite surprised when the number reached just under 80!! All were quickly loaded on to the van and disappeared in to a wet, windy and dark afternoon.

After a few weeks we flew out to Kefalonia and just before the pre-arranged delivery day we received a call from your guys in Greece informing us that they were coming over to the island. As its almost impossible to find our Villa we agreed to meet at the village shop and we could show them the way. Again, on the delivery day we received a call saying they were at the shop so we dashed up and they followed us back. You cannot imagine the black sky and lighting storm that was occurring all around us as we arrived back at the Villa and the speed your guys practically ran at to unload before a curtain of rain arrived.

Originally planning a dedicated Nomad vehicle for the journey, we calculated that we would be able to save the client a lot of money by allocating space on one of our regular vehicles instead.  Since the departure and arrival timings were suitable and sufficient space was available for to carefully load the delicate equipment, it made perfect sense to conduct the removal this way.

With an insurance value of almost £700,000 the equipment is the highest value consignment Nomad has moved to date.

The highly precise equipment had to be handled extremely carefully, and Nomad’s team were up to the task.  The most delicate instruments have their own travel cases so no special packing was required, but they needed to be handled with the utmost care and attention throughout the move.

The international vehicle used for the journey was one of Nomad’s 3,300cft removal trailers with air-ride suspension, pulled by Nomad’s new Euro 6 DAF XF truck.  On collection in Oxford we were able to get this vehicle right onto the site, with enough space to use the tail lift of another Nomad truck to carefully lift everything into place.

Crete is a different story of course, and we faced the all-too familiar problem of difficult access to the delivery location, which is in one of the most remote parts of the island (surely one of the most remote places in all of Europe).  Unfazed by the challenge, the Nomad team used a series of shuttle vans to carefully transport each item to its new home.

As usual, everything went well and the client was very pleased with the move.

The Greek government has provided heartening guidance for British people living in Greece or planning to move to Greece, who may be concerned about the impact of Brexit.  On a dedicated website dealing with Brexit in Greece (https://brexit.gov.gr/uk-citizens-in-greece/) the government lays out detailed guidance on what British people can expect in each Brexit scenario.

In all scenarios British people can happily move to and settle in Greece, even in the event of a “no deal” Brexit.

The government has announced a “grace period” lasting until 31^st December 2020, during which UK citizens will be able to register and stay permanently in Greece, regardless of whether they arrived before or after the UK’s exit from the EU.

The scenario receiving most media attention at the moment the supposed “no deal” exit.  The Greek government’s exact wording in relation to this scenario, for people who arrive in Greece after the exit date, are:

“UK citizens and their family members entering the country and wishing to stay in Greece after the withdrawal date, will also enjoy a grace period, from withdrawal date until the 31 December 2020, during which they will have the opportunity to register and stay, also according to the rules in force before the UK’s withdrawal from the EU.”

The very helpful website covers a number of other scenarios and provides comfort for British emigrants to Greece, whatever their current status.  For those who are already in Greece but have not yet registered themselves as such, the same grace period will also apply, so they will be able to register and stay permanently in the country.

The website has a helpful Q&A section which answers specific questions relating to work permits, travel arrangements and healthcare.  The overall theme of the content is that the Greek government is trying to make everything as easy as possible for UK citizens.

With the UK parliament deadlocked and both sides threatening to bring down the government, there is an increasing likelihood that Brexit will not happen at all.  But if the UK does leave the EU, even without a deal, it is very heartening to know that UK citizens will be welcome in Greece.

One might even wonder if some British citizens who had not yet considered moving to Greece would, in the event of a disastrous Brexit outcome, find themselves moving to a beautiful Greek island to escape the mess back home.

Conducting removals to the Greek islands is a fascinating business.  We never cease to be amazed by the beautiful locations our customers choose to live, and we’re always up for the challenge.  This time a customer was moving from the UK to the tiny island of Hydra, off the Peloponnese in Greece, and contacted us to help with his removal.  There was just one problem, he said: trucks aren’t allowed on the island!  In fact all vehicles are completely prohibited.  Not ones for shying away from a challenge, we didn’t hesitate to take on the job.

Removals to Hydra involve firstly parking the truck at the “port” on the mainland, before carefully transferring the goods into a small boat!  On arrival on the island, it’s time to load up the… donkeys!  That’s right, donkeys.  This is not our normal modus operandi, but when in Rome…

And finally, the delivery into the customer’s house (which was relatively easy compared to the odyssey we had undertaken to get here).  Our customer Mr Burgess was very helpful and even insisted on helping us carry the goods into his home.  All in all it was a great job, and another one for the Nomad history books.

Compared to this job, most of our removals to and from the Greek islands are relatively straightforward!  But every job involves a certain degree of difficulty.  We’re lucky to have an outstanding team who are capable of doing even the toughest of removals, while still having fun.  If you want to move to or from the Greek mainland or any of the Greek islands, Nomad International is the company to use.

Nomad’s New Euro 6 Truck in Crete

Beautiful early morning photo taken in Crete two weeks ago, with the White Mountains in the background living up to their name. Crete is such an amazing place, with winter temperatures into the 20s while there is snow on the mountains!

This is the first trip to Greece for our new tractor unit. We’ve got a busy year ahead so this truck won’t be still for very long, it will be almost non-stop to and from Crete and the other Greek islands.

From the Greek Reporter – An excavation in western Crete has uncovered a sealstone engraved with Minoan hieroglyphics, the first time such evidence has ever been found in the area.

A four-sided red jasper sealstone is among the finds unearthed during this season’s excavation of the Minoan peak sanctuary at Vrysinas, located south of the city of Rethymnon.  The whole area was officially announced and included in the archaeological sites list by the Central Archaeological Council of Greece.

The sealstone, which is carved on all four surfaces with characters of the Minoan Hieroglyphic script, constitutes the sole evidence to date for the presence of this earliest Minoan style of writing in Western Crete.

The excavation, which began in 2004, is conducted by the Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities under the supervision of the archaeologist Helena Papadopoulou in collaboration with Prof. Iris Tzachili from the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Crete.

From CNN: Amid all the news surrounding the European Debt Crisis, it is easy to lose sight of the positive news coming out of Greece, including an increase in tourism of 9.6% over last year.  Chris Kokenes returns to his ancestral home of Kalamata to see how it is faring.

After reading all the bad economic news coming out of Greece, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that the Greek people are still carrying on their daily lives.

Greeks may be cutting back on their vacations, but the country has seen a rise in the number of tourists. The Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises expects more than 10.5 million visitors this year, a 9.6% increase from 2010.

On a recent trip to my mother’s hometown of Kalamata, I was curious to see how this seaside city on the southern part of the Peloponnese, best known for its luscious olives and as the birthplace of the New Age performer Yanni, was faring amid the country’s economic crisis.

Unlike Athens, which is home to more than 3 million Greeks, the images of protests and distress are nowhere to be visibly found in this sun-drenched town of just over 100,000. Here, the city seems to embrace the energy of the sun. Young people seem to outnumber the old.

The origins of the city’s name remain murky, but according to relatives, it’s probably derived from the Greek words “kala ommata,” which means “beautiful eyes.”

Kalamata is hardly a destination most tourists consider when they think of a vacation in Greece. The islands of Mykonos and Santorini are usually the headliners in that fantasy.

Kalamata, the 10th largest city in Greece and the capital of Messinia, is built on the foot of the Tavgetos and near Messinia Bay. It draws mostly Greek vacationers, as it’s a good home base close to other tourist sites in Messinia and ferries to some nearby islands, including the Ionian island of Kythira and Kissamos in Crete.

But for most people, the lure of Kalamata is the beaches, with their blue waters and free sun beds.

The tranquil beaches in Kalamata are more than 6 miles long, and elderly people taking a morning swim is a familiar sight.  Take a leisurely walk or bike ride along the promenade, and it’s hard not to stop into one the many tavernas for a cold Mythos beer and a Mikri Pikilia: a selection of sardines, meatballs, calamari, tomatoes and cucumbers.

ANSA / LifeinItaly.com – Herculaneum, Campania – Archaeologists are discovering new insights into how the Romans lived in Herculaneum 2,000 years ago by what they left behind – in the ancient city’s sewers.

Herculaneum, which lies on the Bay of Naples in southern Italy, was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that destroyed Pompeii, Stabiae and other nearby towns in 79 AD.

Specialists involved in the Herculaneum Conservation Project have excavated the ancient sewers of the city and uncovered the largest deposit of organic material ever found in the Roman world.

Apart from 170 crates of artefacts including pottery,a lamp and 60 coins, the excavation team has recovered bone pins, necklace beads and a gold ring with a decorative gemstone from the sewers.

But it is the organic deposits that may provide the most innovative research – giving researchers an unprecedented insight into the diet and health of the Roman inhabitants.

Delivery of Concert Grand Piano to Apartment in Crete

Removals to Crete are never straightforward, and our team members are used to going the extra mile to deliver to remote or difficult-to-access locations. Many of our customers worry especially about transporting valuable or fragile items over such a long distance. Our customer Mr Kypri recently had all of these concerns in one removal, with his ambitious plan to transport a top-of-the-range Bosendorfer concert grand piano as part of his removal from the UK to his new apartment in Aghios Nikolaos.

Bosendorfer pianos are among the finest in the world, and Mr Kypri’s beautiful 2.25m concert grand piano is a magnificent example. The prospect of transporting it for him was both exciting and daunting, since it presented the dual challenges of being both very fragile and extremely heavy. Furthermore, Mr Kypri’s home in Crete is not a house but an apartment, on a narrow one-way street in the town of Aghios Nikolaos.

As with all of our removals, we planned to transport the piano all the way from door-to-door, by road. We arranged for a specialist piano crating company to meet us on site on collection day and load the export-wrapped piano into a purpose-built wooden crate, which we transported back to our Peterborough warehouse. The crated piano (which now weighed in excess of 1 tonne including the crate) was kept in storage for a short period, while the rest of Mr Kypri’s furniture was taken straight to Crete. Once we received the go-ahead from Mr Kypri to deliver the piano, we booked it onto our next scheduled departure, due to arrive in Crete just prior to Easter.

Because of the narrow streets in Aghios Nikolaos, we knew that our large international lorry would not be able to reach the apartment, so we planned a strategy which involved transferring the piano into our medium-sized shuttle van and then using a crane to lift it into the apartment. Our team of four men would then bring the piano inside, unwrap it and assemble it under the supervision of a piano technician, all of whom were booked in advance.

However, despite our detailed communication regarding this time-sensitive operation, the Cretan company operating the crane failed to turn up! Thankfully Mr Kypri and our team kept their cool, and a few phone calls had the crane outside and ready to go. The crate was removed and the piano (still wrapped and on a special shoe) was transferred to the crane vehicle, then lifted gracefully into the air, and finally onto Mr Kypri’s balcony. Our team then brought the piano inside, removed all of the wrapping materials and reassembled the beautiful instrument in its new home, in perfect condition.

Planning and communication were the cornerstones of this removal, but most important was the determination of our team to overcome any last-minute obstacles and complete the job properly on the day.

Story of my day beds!! (A.K.A. the Mamma Mia experience!!)

“Three day-beds were meant to arrive in June but did not!! (Not NOMAD’s fault. The supplier in the UK did not deliver them in time). I contacted NOMAD with the saga (again and again!!) and they were fantastic and very understanding. In order to avoid a second delivery cost, Dave in Athens put them on ferry to Tilos without a driver but clearly labelled for me in Tilos (15 pieces!!) when I was in Tilos in September 2008.

I unfortunately missed the boat in the morning and arrived at the quay to my see day beds leave for their own mini cruise to Rhodes and return to Tilos that evening (phew!!), but good labeling from NOMAD made it happen!! Myself and friends did the Mamma Mia experience (though did not jump into the water!!). See photos to prove NOMAD really can make it happen!
